Tricks to get more engagement on Instagram by industry experts (2020)

Let’s be honest: 2020 has been a s***show and engagement on Instagram is no exception.

With so many accounts joining the platform each day, we are having to divide the attention of our followers with more and mote people every day.

However, with a change of strategy and a trick or two under your sleeve, you can still grow your engagement and —even your following— organically.

We asked some of our favorite Social Media pros:

What is your latest trick to engage with your audience on Instagram?

Here’s what they said:

“Use the DM Me Sticker on Instagram Stories! It's not the newest tool in the Instagram Stories kit, but with the Instagram DM Me sticker, you can encourage your community to send you a direct message and have a meaningful conversation via private messages. I've seen brands use it to gather product feedback and creators opening a conversation so they can learn from their community of followers in a safe space. It's also very useful if you don't have 10K followers and you want to share a link with your audience!”

“More interactive behind-the-scenes. This may mean getting out of my comfort zone by being on camera more and spending more time with community engagement - but asking more questions is key! I’ve found that when you’re building a community, they want to contribute to your conversation, offer advice, and have more 2-way dialogue on relevant topics.”

“I've gotten really good at listening to the topics my audience is interested in and the problems they want to solve. I create content around those topics & share tricks to solve those problems. Because I'm intentionally making each post a conversation with my target audience, the engagement with the people I'm trying to help happens naturally.”

Stephanie Gilbert, founder of The Social Media CEO

“Instagram pictures that are just phone photos are doing so much better than fancy blog photos. Not that I’ll never share a pro photo again, and not all do terribly, but having a mix of professional photos, Canva templates, and in the moment iPhone pictures is my sweet spot! My content is performing the best it has performed in a while.”
