How to Create the PERFECT Instagram Introduction Post for Your Small Business
Instagram is a powerful platform for your small business to showcase your products or services to a wide audience. BUT, with so many businesses grasping for attention, it can be difficult to make a strong first impression.
Your introduction post is a crucial step in establishing your brand, and who you are, on Instagram, and it's essential to get it right. Let’s dive into what makes a GREAT Introduction post, how often you should post one, and some prompts, tips, and tricks you can use to help create one!
“What should I include in my introduction post on Instagram?”
Your introduction post should include essential information about your business and what you offer. This information should be clear, concise, and easy to understand. Start with a brief introduction to your business, including your name, what you do, and what sets you apart from your competitors. You can also include your mission statement, values, or tagline to give viewers a better understanding of your brand.
And if you are feeling stuck with what you should include, you can use these questions as prompts so you can create engaging content that resonates with your audience:
What inspired you to start your business?
What problem does your product or service solve?
What makes your business unique?
What are your values or mission statement?
What are your goals for your business?
“What visual should I use for an introduction post on Instagram?”
First impressions are everything on Instagram, so it's essential to make your introduction post visually appealing. You’ll want to use high-quality images, videos, or graphics that represent your brand and catch your viewer's attention. You can create an introduction post in one of three ways:
Number One: Photo or Photo Dump
In the past this has been the most popular way to create an introduction post, and there even used to be an Instagram trend called “Friday Introductions.” And it is fairly straightforward: include image(s) of you and then write more about yourself in the caption. Typically these photos are a bit more professional in nature, but still show off who you are, what you do, while showing off your personality. Then in the caption you can use the following format to write more about yourself:
“Hi my name is [insert your name], and I am the owner of [insert your business name]. And it’s been a while since I introduced myself here on Instagram!
Some things you should know about me:
[insert a fun fact about yourself]
[insert how long you have been in business]
[insert something about your business journey]
Introduce yourself in the comments below so I can get to know more about you!”
This is more of a traditional format, and will help your audience get to know you a little bit better, but might not be the MOST engaging post you can create. This one is a bit more professional, but these next two options bring in a little more fun and personality into the mix!
Number Two: Photo with Text or Graphics
This is actually our FAVORITE way to do introduction posts, and it is the easiest to create in Canva! We love to combine images WITH text to really help stop the scroll on Instagram and bring a little bit of fun to a typical Introduction post!
There are so many fun and unique ways to create graphics in Canva to re-introduce yourself to your audience. You can give them insight into who you are as a person both personally and professionally, you can give them fun facts about you, or you can even talk about your journey! And if you are struggling with how to come up with these ideas or what prompts to follow, we have a couple of Canva templates to help you out with this style of introduction post for Instagram.
Number Three: Video(s)
Now if you are feeling really bold and adventurous you can create some super fun and engaging short form videos to introduce yourself to your followers!! When you create Instagram Reels to introduce yourself to your followers, you really do get to have your personality shine through on video!
While it would be great to talk about your story, talk about your small business, or talk about your journey on Instagram with a talking head video (... which just means you talking directly to the camera), it doesn’t always have to be that complex. You can lean into easier Reels like a video with text on the screen, jumping on a trend, or even using one of these Canva templates:
“How often should I post an Introduction post?”
So we have a few things for you to consider WHEN you should be creating an Introduction post, and these are the general guidelines that we follow or that we suggest to our community!
Option One: create an introduction post AT LEAST once a quarter
This is the bare minimum, but also the easiest way to maintain consistency when introducing yourself to your audience! The best part about this option is that you can sit down and batch create JUST 4 different posts, put them into your favorite social media scheduling tool, and have them go out every three months. This should take you less than an hour, and you are done for the entire year!
Option Two: show your face in your feed every 12 posts
This isn’t a strategy that we created, but we have seen this become very popular on Instagram with the rise of personalization on social media. So no matter your business, you should try and have a post with your face in it at least every 12 posts! Why 12 posts? Basically when someone is scrolling through your profile, they see about 12 posts at a time, and you want to make sure that they can start to recognize your face with your brand as they look at your profile.
This helps with converting new people that land on your profile into actual followers. Yes, this is more time consuming and takes a lot of planning, but once you get used to it, it is a breeze. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a formal introduction post each time. You can just give people some insight into who you are, tell a story, or talk about a lesson you learned!
Option Three: introduce yourself after an influx of new followers
This one is a MUST do if you notice that you gained a lot of followers rapidly. Whether you did a big giveaway, an Instagram Live Room collaboration, or if you had a piece of content go viral, you need to let those new followers know who you are. This is their first time being introduced to your brand!
