Instagram Post Sizes Update: Here’s Your New Size Guide (With Canva Tips!)
If you’ve ever opened Canva, created a post, uploaded it to Instagram… and then saw it get awkwardly cropped or cut off — you are not alone.
But great news: Instagram just rolled out a major update to how feed post sizing works in 2025 — and this time, it’s actually good news for creators. 🙌
Let’s break down the new sizing, what it means for your posts, and how to make sure your graphics always look polished and professional. (Psst — if you don’t want to deal with dimensions at all? We’ve got a free set of perfectly-sized Canva templates for you at the end.)
🆕 The Big Instagram Sizing Update (as of May 2025)
According to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, Instagram just confirmed they’re now supporting full 3:4 ratio posts in the feed — with no cropping.
From his Threads account.
So what’s the change?
👉 Before: You could not post 3:4 images on Instagram. You had to post 4:5 as the maximum ratio, but they’d get cropped slightly on either side
👉 Now: You can upload full 3:4 ratio images, and they’ll appear tall in the feed and on your grid. No more cropping.
🖼 Quick Guide: 2025 Instagram Feed Sizes
Let’s decode the most important sizes to know this year:
→ 1:1 Ratio (Square) — 1080 x 1080 px (do not use!)
Classic but outdated. Posts look small on the scroll and cropped on the feed. Skip this unless your brand is super minimalist.
→ 4:5 Ratio (Vertical) — 1080 x 1350 px
Still the most common vertical size — gets more screen space than a square, but crop slightly on the new grid (very little and not usually an issue!).
→ 3:4 Ratio (Tall Post!) — 1013 x 1350 px
NEW GO-TO: These look sleek and maximize your post’s visual impact on both the feed and grid.
👉 Consider 3:4 ratio (1013 x 1350) for most Canva graphics moving forward.
👉 Totally fine to continue to use 4:5 ratio (1080 x 1350), but if you use 4:5 ratio, just make sure you have a good margin and it will look just fine with a very slight crop on the profile grid, just as it has been doing since the switch to a tall grid size.
📹 Reels + Video Sizing (Still Important!)
Even with the grid update, Reels sizing stays the same — but there’s a catch:
Video Format (Reels): 1080 x 1920 px (9:16)
Preview/Grid Size: 1013 x 1350 px (3:4)
That means: your Reels cover should be designed in 9:16, but considering the center 3:4 for text and other imagery, so it looks clean in the grid.
🧩 What About Puzzle Grids and Banners?
Puzzle feeds aren’t dead — but they do need updated sizing too. If you’re using 3-, 6-, 9-, or 12-post puzzles, here’s the latest breakdown:
3-part banner: 3039 x 1350 px
6-part puzzle: 3039 x 2700 px
9-part puzzle: 3039 x 4050 px
12-part puzzle: 3039 x 5040 px
These will need to be custom size in Canva or Adobe Express.
✨ How to Design with These Sizes in Canva (Without Losing Your Mind)
You don’t need to manually type in dimensions every time. Here’s how to simplify:
👉 Tip 1: Set a Custom Size Template
In Canva, click "Create a design" → "Custom size" and use:
1013 x 1350 px or 1080 x 1350 px for regular feed posts and Carousels
1080 x 1920 px for Reels or Stories
Then duplicate that base design for future use.
👉 Tip 2: Resize pages of your own templates
If you see the need to change the size of your Canva designs, you don’t need to start over or decide which size to go with. You can simply click on the 3 dots on the top of the Canva design and resize page to whatever size you want. That will make a copy, so you get to keep both versions and be more prepered if any changes come again.
👉 Tip 3: Use Templates
Choose your favorite templates and use and reuse them in your content, inserting a new one every so often.
