AI Policy - Your Template Club & Trend Drops
Last Updated on August 11, 2026
We DO NOT use AI to come up with our template concepts or design them for us.
The ideas, the layout, the copy, the strategies that go into them, our colors, typography and element choices are all 100% human decisions.
Every single template is made with our brains and our hands, by me, the team, and the brand designers we hire.
I come from over 20 years of creative and marketing, 15 of those at Cartoon Network, during which I won 12 industry awards. So, like most experienced creatives, I am not a fan of outsourcing creativity to AI.
Luckily, we don't need to.
Where we do use AI: Canva's editing tools.
Background remover for photos and videos, Magic Grab, Magic Eraser, Magic Expand are Canva image and video editing tools. We use those to create trending effects, make sure you're actually able to edit our templates and make them yours. Any of the templates you find inside Canva may use one or more of these tools as well.
Our rule: we use analytical AI over generative AI, whenever possible.
ANALYTICAL AI is the “old AI” that reads what's already there and separates it. Ex: Background Remover. It looks at your photo, works out where the subject ends and the background begins, and cuts along that line. It isn't inventing anything, it's just measuring. This kind of AI has been quietly running inside design and photo apps for about a decade. It also doesn't replace anyone's creative work, because it can only work with the image you already made or shot.
GENERATIVE AI is the "new AI," the kind that invents an image or a video from a text prompt. Example: Magic Grab. Completely different scale of technology. These models are trained on enormous amounts of existing work scraped from the internet, mostly without the original creators being asked or paid. And both the training and each generation run on massive data centers that use significant electricity and water for cooling.
So when we need a subject on a clean background, we'll always try to use a real background photo with a cut-out photo layered on top before we let AI make up an image from scratch. We keep generative AI tools to a minimum.
Better for the work. Better for other creatives. Better for the planet. And your content doesn't end up looking like the same five AI images everyone else is posting.
Heads up about "AI info" labels:
Those editing tools leave metadata behind in the file. Meta and other platforms are changing their policies around disclosure as they go, so they may add an "AI info" label to your post that uses any of these editing tools, whether it’s one of our templates or not.
These labels are informational only. They don't affect your reach, your engagement, or your account standing.
