How To Host Instagram Lives Like a Pro
Besides that, there are a lot more advantages to start doing Instagram LIVES:
They are easy to do (once you apply our tips below!)
They convert a lot more than a social post
When you're live, Instagram notify all your followers to come watch it, so it raises engagement
When you share your live in stories for a day, the algorithm will show it ahead of most accounts that only have stories
They are totally free!
So now that I have your attention, let's get to it!
PLAN YOUR LIVE
Decide on a theme. It can be a general Q&A, a demo of one of your products, you can teach them something, interview someone or just talk about a relevant topic in your niche.
Pick something to promote. Add an announcement at the beginning and end of your broadcast about a new product, a promotion, an event, etc. Bonus points if it's related to your theme.
Write down your bullet points. Even if you are doing a Q&A, it's important to prepare enough topics to talk about, in case you don't get enough questions and not fast enough.
Run a test. Whether you do this from a separate personal account or from the main/business account, you should jump live real quick to be sure that your mic and camera both work.
PROMOTE YOUR LIVE
Promote it on a post! Create a post about your theme 2 days prior and tell people to tune in at a certain date and time to your live.
Promote it in a story (good chance to use the countdown sticker)
Put a note about it on your newsletter. You could even offer an incentive for people to watch it live, such as giving away a product or service.
Cross-promote in other social media platforms you're active in.
EXECUTE YOUR LIVE WELL
Find a good angle for your camera. Make sure the image looks well lit, the background looks good (add some books, move the plant closer!). Use a tripod so your phone is not moving. Alternatively, you can add some books under your laptop for ideal height and prop your phone against the screen. Also pick a quiet place.
Open Instagram stories, choose LIVE and get started. Just go for it!
Pin the theme of your live, so people who join halfway know what is going on. Before going live, write a short text on your phone on what the live is about, copy and paste on the first comment when you go live, and pin to top (to pin you just tap the comment after you post it and you will see the option)
Start speaking right away. Most people wait for others to join, but if you do that, you will have an awkward start once the live is shared in your stories.
Be personable. Say hi to some of the people joining, mention their names when answering questions, apply examples to their businesses or needs.
Make your live last around 30 minutes. You don't want your live to be too short because Instagram will be notifying people you're live and you want to give them time to join. Sounds like a lot but it goes by fast.
AFTER YOUR LIVE
Share the live to stories for 24 hours. Make sure you select to share the live in stories. You will get a lot more viewers that way. You will see an option as you click on end live.
On the next day, check your live to see how many people watched it before it disappears. That way you have stats and can compare for the next time.
Take some screenshots of your live before it goes away. You can use that later for a story mentioning the live or to promote a future live.
Follow up. If you had any questions you were not able to respond during your live, rewatch it to write them down and respond them in stories, on a post or even by DMing the person who asked.
Don't worry too much if your first lives aren't perfect! If you're having problems or technical difficulties, you can tell people what's going on and even finish your live sooner (in which case you don't need to share it in stories). Even Instagram had a funky live on their first one, so just go for it!
PRO TIP: TO EXPOSE YOUR ACCOUNT TO NEW PEOPLE, TRY A SPLIT-SCREEN LIVE, WHERE YOU INVITE ANOTHER ACCOUNT TO JOIN YOU. THAT WAY BOTH ACCOUNTS FOLLOWERS WILL BE NOTIFIED YOU ARE LIVE.
We still have a few tickets left for this Friday's class!
